My knuckles and feet normally turn red after a while when training on the heavy bag, but I don't worry about it. However, if you twist your ankle making bad contact, then I would stop and rest.

It's all part of the conditioning process. At least you know what it feels like, so if you ever really had to defend yourself you know what it feels like.

Redness will develop if striking with the instep. I also have been kicking with ball of foot (toes pulled back) for help on breaking technique wit the roundhouse. If you're conditioning for thai kicking then go for the shins....excellant way to condition for that particular roundhouse execution!
