Hello, I was wondering if there are significant differences in the way a kata is performed between Shotokan and Kyokushin Kai styles.

although the same root kata
they will look different.

visit your local Kyokushin dojo and watch.

They are most different in kumite, a little in stance and yes, the kata are different. Both have merits.

Since Mas Oyama trained in shotokan and Goju Ryu there are Katas from Both karate styles.

this is true. howeer he modified all of them
and they do not look quite the same as the
origanals. Seipai for example is barely recognizable,
while others are more similar. He also made up a
couple of his own such as Garyu "Reclining dragon"
