Open.

Our next Tournament allows 3 second grabs,
encircling the leg, pulling down into a knee
and some other minor deviations to the
Kyokushin Style of Knockdown karate .

I am also sponsoring a Byakuren Stylsit
to come to my dojo to teach their brand
Of Knockdown Karate for a semianr.

Fun Stuff!

We also Cross train with Kickboxers, as well
as other styles who do Knockdown Karate.

I just did my first point sparring tournament and got DQ'ed for spin side kicking my opponent and knocking the wind out of him. All the Sensei at the tournament made such a fuss about my control but the dude jumped onto my foot! No joke my kick was still in its chamber. If that guy believes that he could defend himself on the street I feel bad for him. Anyway after that experience I will never do a point tourney again it was so lame, in full contact what I did was good but in karate tag..............

I think that any Karate-ka can decide to fight FUll contact
on occasion and good for them, it will enhance training.

But in my mind, to be a "Full Contact Fighter" means that this
is the diminant style that you train for. it means that you are fighting
on a frequent and regular basis for full contact. and this means
doing the body conditioning, drills for fighting, etc etc
so that when you do fight full cotact, weather it is 1 X a week
or 4 X a week, you are getting mentally and physically ready
for it all the time. this helps to get accustomed to fighting
hard contact, and also actually cuts down on injuries.

yes.

An example of a typical touranment we have been to
http://www.uskyokushin.com/results/event_2002_10_05.htm

This is not the organization I am in personally, but they
have open tournaments, and through a decent event.

I think that there are so many small organizations in the
U.S., that open tournaments are pretty necessary,
otherwise the divisons are too small.

Of course, there are still some closed tournaments too though.

Go to this link
http://www.fullcontactkarate.com

And then click on the internal link called "listings"
and you will find a break down of some of the
major Knockdown oriented styles and if their
events are open or closed.

Cheers,
