HI,
WTF "sport" style of TKD IS nearly all kicks.
when i was in TKD i learned a lot about the art. They focus on the kicks, yes. But they also have strikes and blocks. LOTS Of hand blocks, i dare to say they have as much hand blocks as in karate. lol
The ITF style of TKD allows straigh punches to the head in the sparring.

Yep.

TKD students do focus on kicks cause TKD is a very quick and flexliable art when it comes to the legs.
Karate basically runs the basic punches, and kicks.
Kung Fu deals more with stances

Taekwondo is a modern martial art, characterized by it's fast, high and spinning kicks. There are multiple interpretations of the name taekwondo. Taekwondo is often translated as 'the way of hand and foot'.
We don't just kick...we also are knowledgeable in hand techniques too (punch & block) however, TKD is kick oriented.

it is common for people to assume that taekwon do is all kicks becuase that is usally all they are exposed to...they see competitions where oppoents bounce around the ring and occasionally throw one or two kicks or a kicking combination...and thats it (what ?thats it? this style is stupid..they use no hands..no taekdowns no grappling..e.t.c.)although taekwondo is the worlds most popular martial art..the true art is rarely seen on tv or the local tournement...which leads people to believe thats what taekwondo is all about..we use plenty of hands..throws ..locks the "olympic style" matches are the tip of the iceberg and do not represent the true essence of taekwondo

i agree with TAEZEE....taekwondo is a well rounded style....the problem is that in today's world no one sticks around long enough to learn the more complicated techniques........ it's just that we teach the kicks first.....

Reasons for more kicks is that more power can be genarated in a kick than in a punch.
Streching daily will help coz some of the kicks they do are realy quite imperssve if you can pull it off.
