Just wondering what you all think of the following, which was printed in a local newspaper last week:

The [name deleted] club belongs to a wider organization, the Sui Loung interclub, which is named after a well know Tae Kwon Do artist.

"There's a famous martial artist from the 1960's named Bruce Lee...you may have heard of him," said the Master of the [name deleted] club.

"In Hong Kong, Bruce Lee was more famous than Wayne Gretzky. He couldn't leave home without being mobbed."

"But in Hong Kong they didn't call him Bruce Lee. His name was Lee Siu Loung which means 'Lee - Little dragon'," [name deleted] explained.

"But there are s many clubs calling themselves 'The Dragons' that we decided to call our organization the Siu Loung interclub.

They surely have to mean JKD instead of TKD, someone really messed that up.

Yeah, Cory's right, sounds like a type error. Bruce Lee did explore many different arts to develope his own, but I don't believe he took Taekwondo. JKD and TKD. You say potatoe, I type tomatoe.

Sijo Bruce Lee was a very good friend of TKD legend Jhoon Rhee - The two of them compared notes and trained together on many occasions. I think they both benefitted from the experience!

I'm afraid that it is not a typo, the whole article is about a local Tae Kwon Do school, and promoting a Tae Kwon Do tournament. The interclub consists of 5 Tae Kwon Do schools in the area. I cut out the first little section as it talked about the tourney.

I think the word "studied" is being used very broadly in this instance. While Bruce Lee worked out and discussed techniques, ideas, etc. with many, many people, that doesn't mean that he necessarially "studied" their martial arts in the way that the term is normally used. Otherwise I could boast that I've studdied Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Boxing, Kickboxing, Muy Thai, Judo, Ju Jitus, BJJ, Kung Fu, Ninjitsu, JKD, underwater basket weaving, etc, etc......

I don't get it. So what - they want to call themselves Siu Leung (little Dragon) that does not imply to me that there is any Bruce Lee connection. Bruce never 'studied' TKD. As was stated above he did train with Jhoon Rhee.

I think that stating that the club was named after a "well named Tae Kwon Do artist" and then mentioning Bruce Lee is implied.

That would be like me telling the media that Bruce was a disciple of Shaolin because of Enter the Dragon.

They can call themselve "little Dragons" that's their perogative...but the misrepresentation of the art is in my opinion wrong.
