first off jack I dont see how the stevie wonder techniuqe will help you...unless you get jumped during a blackout...just kidding....one does not learn how to swim without getting in the water and swimming...in other words say i want to learn how to swim...will i learn by sitting by the side of the pool or beach and reading a manual "lets say a idiots guide to not drowning" well you could spend years reading this book...imitating the moves(like forms<hyung or kata) on dry land ...mabye splashing in a bathtub to try to get the feel of real swimming(like we do with sparring or tag full contact) hey these are okay to sort of prepare you..but what if one day while standing there reading your book like a dumbski someone walks up behind you and pushes you in the deep end without warning...(like a surprise attack) now youre in shock and youre sinking fast in your panic you try to recall the first lesson from your book..doh !!youre drawing a blank all you know is youre in trouble and you froze up..a few hours later the paramedics are dragging your bloated body from the bottom...you thiought you knew what you were doing...well look at you now....and this is same type of illusion that most martial artist have they study all these moves they have bad fighting habits and they repeat them over and over and they feel hey I can fight..until one day they actually have to use this nonsense and they suffer the same fate as the swimmer...so let me ask you do you know how to swim? have you actually gotten in the ocean and tried or are you waiting to be come the next victim? this should make you evaluate if your current training can help you..are you just practicing the motions on the side or are you ready to dive into some real self defense..think about it

Nice, errm, metaphor there

I do get some experience, there are these people in Britain we call "Townies". It does not simply mean they are from towns... these are the people that walk around in their designer clothes talking tough and making trouble whenever they can. I get enough experience of dealing with my fear with this lot... these days if a group of them walk up to me and start threatening I'm not even scared, I just say "I dont want trouble" or "yeah good for you" . I've never been attacked on the streets before, but I've gotten into fights when I was younger, luckily none in the last 2 years... they can be a bit of experience for that freezup, that pounding heart and tense feeling in your stomach... I never actually trained in martial arts before that so I didn't have technique to remember, but I still managed to fight and win. If its simply freezing up, I did enough of it as a kid, I'm streetwise now and can avoid trouble... I do so nearly every weekend

I like the point that was brought up before about people who are just smart fighters and never actually have any formal fighting training. These people are a rare breed - imagine what they could do if they were given the best training available!
This is also why we should never shoot our mouthes off about being able to kick butt cos we do martial arts. You never know when you're gonna run into an angry natural fighter who doesn't like to kick cos it's wussy!

True people should know what's going on. Don't take karate cause you'll lose weight if you wanna' lose weight stop eating! If you aren't figuring on using your training then don't train.
