When I was younger I trained some Shotokan Karate in Germany, mostly with my father. I moved to the US many years ago and have not really practiced in about 15 years.

I'd like to get back into it and join a more serious...or reputable school if I can, but I don't know where to begin. Are there any resources on more reputable Karate schools?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum, rasputin! Unfortunately, there isn't a "single source of truth" when it comes to martial arts schools. Your best bet is to visit the schools in your area, try out classes and talk to the instructors, and decide which one is the best fit for you. If you want more information before you make your decision, you can ask the instructors about their history/lineage and ask Sensei Google about them

Hi Rasputin,

While I can't specially comment on the quality of individual schools, I thought I would provide some resources from my website that I encourage potential students to read...
http://www.karatecanberra.com.au/faqs.html#pickamartialartsschool - this is a list we combined and generally refer to.

http://www.karatecanberra.com.au/faqs.html#firstclass - look at the bottom of this FAQ, that dot points at the bottom, in particular point 2 & 3 are some useful goes.

Regards,
RJ.

Dear rasputin, for finding a better school for martial arts fist of all you should see around your area if there any school is present or not. If you got that take some trial classes by this you can know the teaching style of your trainer. If you are not able to find simply search on www.google.com and you will find your desired school.

Finding a school can be really difficult sometimes. But presently I'm practicing at mount kim's martial arts school leesburg, va everything is pretty decent here. So, if you're in leesburg and wish to join me you can join here. Check https://plus.google.com/103378641263949272740
Otherwise, you can even look around in google and find some in your local.

Yes...Welcome to KF; glad that you're here!!

Some good advice thus far. Where, in the US, do you live?

Whichever school you of the MA you do choose, please visit said school as many times as you feel is necessary. The more you visit, and the more different classes you observe, as well as talking with others at the school, the more you'll be able to make your choice.

Then, do a free trial lesson...A FULL CLASS not an abbreviated one either, as a suggestion.

Look forward to hear how your search is going.

Welcome to the forum!

Like everyone has said go check out schools around your area.

Was your old school in Germany a JKA affiliated Dojo or not?

Maybe go to a Shotokan school and train there? Well if there is one that you can find that is good.

Otherwise it is totally up to you and what type of Karate you wish to train in and might interest you the most?
