|
|
I've only been doing karate for a few months, but I'm itching to start another art to coincide with it.
I reckoned a more 'grappling style' art would be best so I don't confuse the two arts, and I found out there's an aikido class near me.
What will I need to get started in it and how much do you think it will all cost? Do you think I could just train in my karate-gi instead of buying a suit for aikido?
Thanks in advance for any answers you guys might have _________________ Smile. It makes people wonder what you've been up to. |

If your gi is all white you can probably use it for Aikido. You'll have to get a hakama at some point though.
There seem to be a few recent discussions on people interested in or starting to take Aikido lately... you should take a look at those, especially this one:

From experience a Judo Gi is better, as you'll need a tough one for all the different grabs. Dont worry about the Hakama until 1st Dan.

Both these stores I use and are realy reliable for Dogi's and the like. Take a few classes and make sure you like it before you buy anything.
Best of luck in studying the style that could one day make you a jedi! MWHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHA!
Or not, but flower arranging is fun to. |

There are several aikido styles, teachers and policies, so best you can do is contact the dojo directly and ask the same questions. Some instructors think karate gi is ok, some say get thicker one. Some styles use hakama from brown belt on, some from black belt on, some consider it completely optional. |

The Aikido person I know wears a hakama and she's at 5th kyu or so. I guess it varies a lot out there.
The website below has dogis made especially for Aikido but I guess for you it would be an overseas order wouldn't it. Well, I'll add it anyway.

Again, that's just one organization's policy. |

No, thats the traditional policy from Japan and the way it was done by the systems creator O Sensei Ueshiba. |

Nowadays there are several different organizations in Japan, and abroad. What O Sensei did or his followers do, is no longer the de-facto standard that everyone is to follow. |
