To all you SMJJ, Submission fighers, BJJers, Judoka and any one else that could help me out on this.

Situation:

Kensai = 13 stone

Other guy = Gotta be over 15 stone

Now, when we start Newaza, we are on hour knee's. When the fight starts he basically falls on me forcing me back and he is strait into the side control!

So, I was talking to one of the other guys, and was wondering whether I could pull off Seoi Nage on the floor, or a mini sweep....... any other ideas?

I'm not sure I follow. He's too close to you at the start that you can't get out of the way? I was at a seminar this weekend featuring James M. Nakayama, Shihandai, and we went over newaza on the last day using various pivot throws. So much of it had to do with just timing - if you move off the centerline either too soon or too late you are going down.

Without seeing what is going on its hard to say. If all else fails pull guard, if he's bigger you'll likely end up there anyway. If you can, go back in such a way that allows you to use his momentum to follow up with a sweep.

If he is just driving forward you can try to move, get around and take the back, back up and snap him down into a front headlock / choke.

It really depends on how he is taking you down.

There are quiet a few other "basic" throws and sweeps that can be done from the knees as well, it just depends...

Kensai,

If I'm correct in visualizing your situation, when falling back either with the opponents weight or if this is your plan to lure him in. When fading back place your foot (right or left ) on the persons hip while letting them reach in with there hands, as you continue to fall back your other foot (which is just sitting there doing nothing) place this on the side of the knee, bring his/her knee in while your pushing is hip out - this creates Kuzushi and over he/she goes - it's a pretty basic tech. this then has your opponent at odds end to change position or be forced over - Bjj'ers might call this a sweep, Sub fighters call it something else.. but I have been doing this for a couple of years and it takes timing to get. If you time it right and your opponent is still reaching out - easy arm bar. game over.

i think i know what you mean, do you start gripping each others gi? if not as soon as you start, straight away side roll away. this may buy you some time.
you could also try flicking your legs out towards him so they are on his hips and grab his sleeves (gaurd). hope this can help.
