If someone starts bad talking any style, especially one you've trained in then clearly they aren't a true martial artist. Most styles have more or less the same basics, and everything comes from basics. There might be small differences behind the specific technique, but the basics follow the same laws. Sounds like either that instructor is unsure of their own martial ability, or has an ego the size of Colombus. Either way is that someone you want to learn from?

I agree. Good technique should transfer from one style to another. There will be some subtle differences from style to style, though; hand on hip as opposed to at the ribs, or even not at all, considering Boxing. But I wouldn't think its something so major it couldn't be addressed in training.

I just started cross training in another style, and I left my rank at the door. That was my decision though, the instructor gave me the choice to take an advanced belt rank from day one simply because he respected the rank I had already earned, even if it was a different system. We even have discussion on differences in technique. Any instructor who isn't willing to learn from a white belt, isn't an instructor.

Good thoughts, here, too. Whenever I do a different style, I will let them know my rank if they like, but don't expect any special treatment or recognition. I just want to come to class and train.
