Hi all - Do most of you have different classes available for belt levels? Just curious.... we have a few per week where everyone can train together (which ih is great to have the beginners see the higher belts) and then we have classes just for white - green, green - purple, brown and black, black only and Nidan and above. This allows more specialization obviously. what do yall think?

I wish our classes were structured that way. I am one of three Black belts in the class excluding the instructor. And the rest of the class in white-green with one brown. We either get stuck doing the basics, or teaching, I would rather get started on more advanced moves.

Our adult classes are mixed. I like it that way. I can work with the black belts, and learn faster.

The kids classes are split up.

The classes are seperated as well.
kids
white - green
blue - junior black

adults
white - green
blue - black
black only ( senior brown belts preparing for thier Black belt test can sometimes come )

adult black belts can attend any class no limit on the amount of classes a week. They just have to agree to help teach when called to do so.
It is not fair to the senior brown - black belt students if there is no class geared towards advanced techniques.

My classes and the ones that I attend are structured the same general way kempocos explains it. You really should talk to your teacher if you think that you aren't getting enough training on higher rank techniques.

The way I see it,as a sensei you need to take care of the new commer to make sure they start on the right foot but at the same time you need to take care of you hire belts cause the are the one who's going to take care of you fallowers when you are gone.so I belive in split class for hire belts.

With the higher belts being able to attend separate classes you are able to work on particular katas and bunkai that are specific to that level, whereas if you have a mixed all belts class, the higher belts are limited as to what they can do, except basics and 2 - 3 kata, sparring, etc.... Although I do think it is important for beginners to train with black belts once in a while so they can see the difference in techniques, power, breathing, ritual, and so on. Having both available is the best way , I think, if possible.

In a perfect world it would be great to have all one color belts in one class but we dont have the numbers our class is never bigger than 20 students so all ranks are together. Which works ok because the higher ranks can work with the lower ones.

I do seperate based on age.

G95 - I still see that as a disservice to your upper belts. They should have time that is only for thier advanced level of training. I mean no dis respect IMHO
