Never rely only on Mwashi geri, when in a karate kumite. You kick and his hands are not busy blocking some punches? Then ouch Try to avoid opening a kumite session with kicks. In order to succed you must be quite fast. You are lucky he didn't sweep your legs ... ouch again ...
Try to use your hands, elbows ... anything. When you kick do it very quick, avoiding your leg to be caught or the supporting leg to be swept. Try to pull back the leg as soon as possible. And start the leg technique with the knee raised to your chest in front of you ... thus you can chose mawashi, mae, yoko or ushiro geri and the opponent wouldn't know, because there are many possibilities.
You've been training for little time. You'll beome better with the time

Try to change the game a little. If your having problems with an offensive fighter, try to put him on the defensive by attacking with strong combinations yourself. You may find that his defensive game is not so good.

The reverse is true when sparring with a counter fighter. Try to draw him out.

Keep fighting him is what I would say to do. You will only get faster and better at knowing what strikes he throws. Keep practicing.

Do drills to increase speed if you need to. Don't concentrate on one part of the body. Keep focus on his/her chest area. That allows you to see more of the movements.

Unless you are in a tournament, dont try to win. Every time you spar, work on a single defense or combo until you get good at it. Winning in the dojo is not important. That is when you should experiment and learn to improve your techniques. Over time you will find what works for you and find yourself
scoring then winning without trying to. I used to be terrible at point sparring, now Im not as bad . This approach has worked for me. The most important thing of all is to relax, have fun, and enjoy yourself it will all fall into place in time.......
