There's a couple similar topics in the Weapons forum. We have not specifically covered gun defense, but I would end up using some of the same principles as knife defense. However, as already stated, I would need to already be in close for this to work. |

We learn both knife and gun defense at 4th gup. At black belt they teach you more, like different styles of attack. At 1st gup you learn stick defense. All belts learn nunhaku vs. swords.

Hiya, a gun defence can actually work. This why people train for them so that, by some degree at least, the fear that will come over them at the crucial moment can be learned to be controlled or even deluded. Not knowing what to do in such a situation would harbor the reaction you mentioned, not the other way around. Each gun situation is unique and very different from another. THe key to survival is keeping a cool head. Those who survive gunfights on the street are those who do not panic. Those who survive gun confrontations on the street are those who do not panic. Just like everything else you can 100% defend yourself from any gun situation, but you can 100% change your ability to handle any gun situation. Just my 2 shilings.(sp?) |

I actually started the thread due when Whithers asked what equipment to buy for his new school. Some people had mentioned guns for gun defense.
There is a saying don't bring a "knife to a gunfight", but that doesn't mean you should leave the knife if you don't have a gun.
My take on knife defence is that it is survival, not defence. Someone already said you are going to get cut. There are many officers out there that are armed that have been seriously injured or killed by a knife. They all have defence training, but to be quite honest against a trained knife fighter it is a loosing proposition. Watch "Surviving Edged Weapons" by Calibre Press a police knife survival video. It dispells many myths that are perpetuated by martial arts instruction about knife defence. The famous X-block above the head and kick to the groin is a perfect example.
As for guns, defense only if your going to die anyways. Trying to beat a gun is stupid, unless your going to die anways. Remember most people holding the gun are probably more scared than you and are unlikely to use it unless scared or provoked.

We do knife a lot. As well as bat, stick, and other swing type weapons.
As far as gun I don't teach how to defend. I say do what they want. Be calm and talk to them. Only try something if you know your dead anyhow. Plus I only do those with my advanced students. |

If you're going up against a knife back off and avoid rather than blocking until you can go for a trap. Throwing your arm out in the way is asking for injury. Also if you're wearing a coat or similar and get the chance you can wrap it around an arm, provides some degree of defense against the blade.

Our knife defenses begin around 5 gup(green) and our gun defenses at 2 gup(red) in my TSD schoool We also have stick defenses in all of these ranks. I enjoy practicing them because they have increased my skill in the close quarter range. The trapping and side stepping feel more practical than all the sparring skills. Also learning the disarms and arm/wrist locks has opened up a whole new aspect of martial arts for me. ..one I like a lot! |

I still meet some people who believe that you can dodge/catch bullets with martial arts.
