Hello,

I have recently moved to Temecula, California, and am looking for Shotokan Karate martial artists to train with. I have not been able to find a Shotokan Karate dojo nearby. The closest one is more than an hour away. Even if there are no Shotokan dojos in the area, we can form a group of motivated people and train together.

Thank you!
Farid

Hello, and welcome to KF!

Have you done an on-line search for schools in the area?

Yes, I have. The closest ones are in San Diego (to the south) and Riverside (to the north). However, they are about an hour drive each way!

I'm afraid a Google search is probably going to cover more ground than asking here, just because Google is much bigger, but I'm sure if someone in the area is a member here, they'll chime in when they see your post. In the meantime, you might look into things like Nextdoor, and see if anyone else in your area knows somebody, or would like to join you for training.

Yes, I have also asked this question in Nextdoor hoping to find people who are interested in training together even if there are no clubs or dojos in the city.

According to Google search, there used to be a Shotokan club in the area called Kobushi Martial Arts, but they seem to be closed now. I hope I can reach some of their members thru these postings.

I appreciate your response.

There is always the possibility that there are simply no active Shotokan practitioners in your area. If that turns out to be the case, I would encourage you to seek training in another art, even if it means "starting over," so to speak.

This is good advise.

After doing Shotokan for 35 years, it would not be easy to close the chapter on Shotokan and start something new. I understand and appreciate your advice as well. Some sort of compromise is going to be needed if I can't find any Shotokan practitioners locally. Having said that, I have not lost hope yet.

You don't have to close the chapter on Shotokan. You can still train it and use it. Taking up another style might show you things you've never thought of, and show you different ways to apply things you've learned from Shotokan.

Anywhere you can find some good training, it will be worth your while.
