I have lots of trouble pulling off standing joint locks during sparring. Can anyone give me some tips to making them work? I saw a similar thread on * which inspired me to post this thread

Practice them slowely to start with, then add them to your sparring.
The best tips i can give without being able to show you individual techniques is this:
1. Make sure you are close enough and keep moving
2. Dont go just for the lock, combine it with strikes and be prepared to flow into other locks if the first doesnt work. |

Just taking a guess here...are you trying to grab and lock a punch?
Voice of experience here..don't!
Locks aren't really good for punches because punches are to fast, and you need a bit of time to apply a lock. They work great against grabs, or in a standup, or prone grappling situation. |

Locks are only a part of the whole, just another weapon of fighting. If the opportunity for a lock appears take it. If it doesn't, do something else. Locks always best when you've already captured your opponents balance. Learn how to control your opponent balance and most of the time the lock is just icing on the cake. _________________ "It is easier to find men who will volunteer to die, than to find those who

shorinryu- yes your right i do try to apply them against punches but they usually fail. i'll remember to stop doing that.
the main problem however is that even when i get a hold on them, despite me having a relatively strong grip they usually pull their hand away sharply or strike me with their other hand and i have a hard time applying their lock this way |

Yes, I'd agree with this. It's not easy just grabbing a guy's harm and trying to put a lock on him..that's why grabbing the punch isn't working. |

If you are REALLY fast, you can push their punch off to the side, make your entire body follow that line of motion, and grab the wrist...but it takes timing and incredible skill if your opponent is a quick puncher. It's probably not worth it since you'll probably only make it work.... 10% of the time, if that. _________________ 1st dan & Asst. Instructor TKD 2000-2003

We have dozens of techniques where we're grabbing or locking a punch, but what are you doing (or trying to do) after that? If you just grab it, yeah you're going to get clocked.
Our grabs/ locks are only the first in a series of steps for the counter. For instance:
X block the puch, clockwise circle as you counter grab their hand, lock the wrist and elbow by grabbing the hand with thumbs on the back of their hand, then kick their midsection in half.
Footwork is cricial as well, to keep the proper distance. However, this was difficult enough to put into words. _________________ Kuk Sool Won - 4th dan
